2018 Ford Flex Review

Ever since its debut in 2009, the Ford Flex has challenged the crossover SUV market with a solid balance of performance, technology, and versatility. Sure, it's about due for a redesign, but a vehicle that can last as long as the Flex has without one speaks to solid design that is built to last. Whether they're looking for a lot of passenger space, tons of cargo room, powerful engine performance, good towing or great technology, drivers in Doylestown and around Philadelphia and Warminster know they can count on the Flex.

So with the new model year hitting dealerships, what does the new model year offer? Read about the technology, performance and comfort balance you get from the new 2018 Ford Flex, and where to test drive one today in this review from Fred Beans Ford of Doylestown.

Ford Flex

This year, the Ford Flex is similar to the 2017 model, except that there is no longer an optional back seat entertainment system. It's available in three different trim levels and is built to seat either six or seven. The standard V6 3.5-liter engine puts up 287 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque matched to a 6-speed automatic. It's front wheel drive, but if you choose the SEL or Limited trim levels you can opt for AWD. At the limited level you can also opt for a 3.5-liter turbo V6 which gives you 356 horsepower with 350 pound-feet.

Features and Trim Levels

At the base SE level, you get parking sensors, a rearview camera, auto-dim mirror, heated exterior mirrors, keyless keypad entry, power driver seat, and a Ford Sync infotainment system with voice commands, 4.2-inch screen, six speakers, CD player and USB support as well as Bluetooth for audio and phone.

At the SEL level, you get better brakes and fog lights as well as remote start and keyless ignition and entry. Inside, you get dual-zone automatic climate control and heated seats with increased power adjust function for driver and passenger, and the full Sync3 infotainment interface which gives you an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio tuner, a second USB port and full Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The top-of-the-line Limited gives you all this and more, including xenon headlights and LED taillights, automatic wipers, power mirrors, GPS navigation, premium audio by Sony featuring 12 speakers and HD radio. You also get trim-specific decorative trim.

There are also a range of add-on packages that give you household style power outlets, improved audio, safety features, driver memory settings and more.

Driving Experience

The Ford Flex is actually a joy to drive for a full-sized, 7-passenger crossover. It never feels sluggish or dragging, there's plenty of power to get up and go, and the available AWD ensures that no matter how tricky the terrain, you'll be able to traverse it. It's got easy steering and solid braking. It drives like a much smaller vehicle than it actually is.
