When it comes to finding solutions to the many problems facing our environment, the best approach is one that solves many problems at once. That's what Ford Motor Company and Jose Cuervo are doing by teaming up.

Ford wants to make eco-friendly new vehicles that are lighter-weight, create fewer carbon emissions, and burden fewer natural resources. Jose Cuervo wants to find a use for its agave fiber -- a byproduct of tequila-making -- other than throwing it away.

The answer to all of those issues: agave-reinforced composite plastics.

"There are about 400 pounds of plastic on a typical car," said Debbie Mielewski, senior technical leader of Ford's materials sustainability research. "Our job is to find the right place for a green composite like this to help our impact on the planet. It is work that I'm really proud of, and it could have broad impact across numerous industries."
