Explorer vs Traverse: Performance Specifications

One of the first things people inspect when in the market for a vehicle is the performance, which is especially important in an SUV. You must ensure that what you'll receive is what you want in terms of capability and versatility. Luckily enough, both the 2020 Ford Explorer and the 2020 Chevy Traverse are arguably just as impressive under the hood, except in different ways. Let's take a look.

The Explorer offers three impressive engines including the standard 300 horsepower 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine. For more power under the hood, you can also opt for the available 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine. This provides a vigorous drive with a whopping 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, allowing you to really make a scene. Plus, combining the latter engine with the available 4x4 drivetrain and the available Class III Trailer Tow Package gives the Explorer the ability to tow as much as 5,600 pounds!

Additionally, the Explorer also offers a 3.3L hybrid engine that's paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Not only will you receive a smooth drive with this available option, but you'll also receive an impressive EPA-estimated fuel economy. In fact, you'll be able to travel more than 500 miles before the need to fill up your tank.

While the Traverse only has one powertrain for all its trim levels, the 3.6L V6, the engine that you'll get gives you a respectable amount of standard power. However, with 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, it provides considerably less power than the Ford Explorer is capable of.

Although, you can combine this with the Traverse model's available all-wheel drivetrain for ultimate control and grip in all driving conditions. Yet, the maximum towing capacity still comes in less, only being able to tow up to 5,000 pounds. Additionally, the Traverse does not offer any sort of hybrid configuration, which also means you won't receive the elevated fuel economy found with the Explorer.

2020 Explorer vs 2020 Traverse: Advanced Technology

In addition to power and efficiency, you'll be able to enjoy quite a few advanced technology features in the 2020 Ford Explorer and the 2020 Chevy Traverse. Both vehicles come equipped with smart infotainment systems: in the Explorer, the SYNC® 3; and in the Traverse, the Chevrolet MyLink®.

These systems feature a dashboard touchscreen, helpful voice command recognition, Bluetooth® capabilities, and satellite radio. Additionally, both systems can be upgraded to include several other premium features that will take convenience and entertainment to the next level, starting with available Wi-Fi hotspots as well as Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone support.

In the Explorer, you can also opt for the B&O™ Sound System from Bang and Olufsen. This comes with up to 14 advanced speakers and a 980-watt amplifier, which can be controlled by the available 10.1-inch LCD Portrait touchscreen. Unfortunately, the Traverse doesn't offer such an advanced sound system and the biggest touchscreen you can get for your dashboard maxes out at 8.0 inches.

Explorer vs Traverse: Smart Safety Features

Safety is always a priority. Luckily, both the 2020 Ford Explorer and the 2020 Chevy Traverse deliver in this category. The Explorer and the Traverse are standardly equipped with progressive airbag systems, rearview cameras, and Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. The latter will tell you when you need to fill up a tire to help you avoid possible flats or blowouts.

The Ford Explorer takes safety to a whole new level, however, with their Ford Co-Pilot360™. This suite of driver-assistive aids comes standard on every model and gives you extended peace of mind with the following features:

  • BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System)
  • Rear View Camera
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pre-Collision Assist
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps

On the other hand, you won't find nearly the amount of safety features standard in the Chevrolet Traverse. In fact, the only standard offering they have compared to the Ford Explorer is a rearview camera. Other features like forward collision assist, blind-spot alert, automatic braking, and more are all only found on the higher trim levels.

However, they also have a few safety features unique to their design like the Explorer model's SOS Post-Crash Alert System. This system will send out an alert in the event of a crash, so help gets to you as soon as possible. As for the Traverse, you'll have Teen Driver Technology, which allows you to set specific safety settings for any teen drivers in your family.
