Putting Performance First

The 2021 Ford F-150 offers a wide assortment of engine variants-six, to be exact:

Engine Option

Horsepower

Torque (lb-ft)

3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6

290

265

2.7-liter EcoBoost® V6

325

400

5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8

3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6

500

3.0-liter Power Stroke® V6

250

440

3.5-liter PowerBoostâ„¢ Full Hybrid V6

430

570

From kicking it off with the 3.3-liter base engine to the efficient and robust hybrid motor, the F-150 has a performance option for every driver to love.

The Sierra, on the other hand, has five engine options to choose from, so you'll also get plenty of choices with this truck. The base engine is a 4.3-liter V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque, so it's comparable to the standard power you'll find in the F-150. But there are some key differences when it comes to available power.

The V8 engines are available as either a 5.3-liter that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, or a 6.2-liter that produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Even with the most powerful engine in the Sierra lineup, you won't be able to get the same amount of power that the Ford F-150 is capable of generating.

Towing Capability to Get the Job Done

Trucks equal towing. While both trucks prove themselves to be quite powerful, when it comes to towing and hauling, one clearly comes out on top.

When properly equipped, the 2021 F-150 can tow up to 14,000 pounds-perfect for all the equipment you need, whether it's worksite supplies or camping gear. When you look at the 2021 Sierra, you might be wanting a little more power. Its towing capacity maxes out at 11,800 pounds when properly equipped.

The Ford F-150 also presents drivers with a payload capacity of up to 3,325 pounds. Compared to the max payload of 2,250 pounds in the GMC Sierra, the Ford model once again proves its ultimate strength.

Though the Sierra comes close to the capability of the F-150, it's really not suited for heavy-duty towing. Everything about the F-150, from its aluminum components to its low-end torque, is designed for heavy towing and hauling. There's a range of standard and available towing features that enhance that capability. Unfortunately, the Sierra is only designed for some recreational towing.

Ford F-150 vs GMC Sierra: Fuel Economy

No one likes stopping to fill up the tank, and typically, when vehicles pack a lot of power under the hood, they lose efficiency-but not in the Ford F-150.

This powerhouse of a truck still gives a great EPA-estimated fuel economy of 25 city/26 highway/25 combined MPG. This fuel economy is when the F-150 is equipped with the hybrid engine, so you'll still have plenty of oomph on the road as well.

The F-150 also has a diesel powertrain option. Diesel fuel burns slower than traditional fuel since it's denser, helping you earn an EPA-estimated 20 city/27 highway MPG.

While the Sierra doesn't offer a hybrid motor, a diesel engine is available. This 3.0-liter Duramax® turbo diesel dips slightly with efficiency with an EPA-estimated 22 city/26 highway MPG.

Elevating Technology

Though the outsides of these trucks are quite rugged, the cabin is filled with amenities that make your travels comfortable and well-equipped. The 2021 Ford F-150 features a hint of luxury in its interior with cozy seating arrangements and array of technology.

Front and center, you'll find the Ford SYNC® 4 interface, which drivers have come to love for its capabilities. Here, you can connect your smartphone and access tons of features, just by scrolling through the available 8-inch dashboard touchscreen.

The Ford F-150 also offers the available Pro-Trailer Backup Assist™ system to help with towing. It also offers numerous safety features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, and a 360-Degree Camera. Not only does this give you a full view of your truck, but it also has a Split-View Display, so you can simultaneously monitor your vehicle in two areas.

Though the Sierra comes with a comfortable interior and technologies as well, they're not quite as impressive. It also has an infotainment system with an available 8-inch screen and Adaptive Cruise Control, but a system like Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ isn't available. Plus, its camera system doesn't provide 360-degree views or split-screen capabilities.

Features to Customize Your Drive

To suit a variety of truck drivers, the Ford F-150 is available in many combinations. From three cab configurations and multiple carrying bed sizes to available convenience and safety technology, the F-150 can be customized to be whatever you want it to be. Also, the performance can be enhanced with additional towing or off-road capability features.

The Sierra has some individual features and option packages, but it doesn't compare to the customization levels available in the Ford model. Plus, it's still only available in five trim levels, compared to the F-150 truck's six. Beyond that, the Sierra doesn't have much by way of specialized performance packages or exceptional technology options.
