2020 F-150 vs 2020 Tundra: Performance Specs

Trucks are known for having some great power generated under the hood, and when it comes to the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra, they both deliver. However, there are some differences when it comes to performance between these models. Let's take a look at them now.

The 2020 Ford F-150 comes standard with a 3.3L V6 engine that pumps out 290 horsepower in its base trim. On top of this standard powertrain, you'll have five other high-performance engines to choose from if you want more power and capability.

If you're looking for serious power, opt for the high-performance High Output 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission duo. This allows the F-150 to generate a massive torque rating of 510 lb-ft, along with an incredible horsepower of 450.

The 2020 Tundra, on the other hand, only offers one engine across all of its trim levels. Its 5.7L V8 maxes out with a horsepower of 381 and a torque of 401, far behind its strong competitor. Additionally, this engine is melded to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It offers fewer gear choices than Ford's 10-speed, so controlling high-end power may prove to be more difficult.

Ford F-150 vs Toyota Tundra: Towing Capability & Payload

One of the best things about a powerful truck, is that you can tow virtually anything you want--within reason--be it for work or play. Luckily, these two pickup trucks have a towing capacity that far outweighs even the most powerful SUV, making them clear choices if you need to haul a trailer, RV, or recreational boat.

However, the Ford F-150 proves to be stronger than most on the market, thanks to the generous power supplied by its robust engine lineup. When properly equipped, this 2020 F-150 possesses a top towing capacity of 13,200 pounds. Pair that with a best-in-class payload of 3,230 pounds, and you can tow and haul to your heart's desire with ease.

Unfortunately, the Toyota Tundra can't handle quite as much trailer weight. Even with its most heavy-duty equipment, the Tundra can only take on 10,100 pounds when towing, which may limit how much you can take with you to job sites or the lake on the weekend.

Additionally, with just 1,730 pounds of payload weight--a full 1,500 pounds less than the Ford F-150--you'll have to pay attention to how much weight you're carrying in the back.

F-150 vs Tundra: Towing & Trailering Technology

Towing can be a dangerous game when approached the wrong way, but with high-tech trailering and towing aids on your side, you can rest easy--the load behind you will be secure.

To make towing stress-free and more enjoyable, the 2020 Ford F-150 offers several high-tech trailering features, starting with its Pro Trailer Backup Assistâ„¢ feature. This synchronizes your truck and trailer just by turning a knob on your dashboard. It will allow you to automatically turn the trailer to make backing up and parking a breeze while towing.

The F-150 also offers an available 360-Degree Camera with Split-View Display. It gives you a handy bird's-eye view of your vehicle's surroundings--but that isn't all. Other trailering technologies include:

  • Trailer brake controller
  • Dynamic Hitch Assist with Line-of-Sight Guide
  •  LCD productivity screen
  • BLISâ„¢ (Blind Spot Information System) with Trailer Coverage

The 2020 Toyota Tundra, unfortunately, doesn't offer anything like the Pro Trailer Backup Assistâ„¢ or many of the other towing technologies you'll find in the Ford model. It does come equipped with a Blind Spot Monitor--though, it doesn't include trailer coverage.

It also has a trailer brake controller, but it proves less advanced than its competitors. Additionally, you'll have to rely on other people and the standard rear-view camera for assistance with backing up and seeing around your trailer.
