2020 Escape vs 2020 RAV4: Performance Specifications
When it comes to performance, both of these crossover SUVs deliver. However, there are some differences to consider when deciding between the two.
The 2020 Ford Escape has four powerful engines in its powertrain lineup: a 2.0L EcoBoost® engine, a 1.5L EcoBoost® engine, a 2.5L Atkinson Cycle Hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid engine. The first two engines offer a standard Auto Start-Stop feature that enhances efficiency by shutting off the engine while at a stop to conserve gas. The latter two engines offer premium driving range thanks to their hybrid capabilities.
When properly equipped, the Ford Escape can put out an impressive 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This makes it possible for the Escape to tow a whopping 3,500 pounds. Pack in the whole family and hitch up the trailer or a boat to the back of the Escape for a fun family weekend away.
As for the 2020 Toyota RAV4, you'll only have one engine-a standard 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that has a max power output of 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This will only give you a maximum towing capacity of 1,750 pounds.
The RAV4 engine can be outfitted with hybrid qualities for certain trim levels in their lineup to help you obtain more efficiency. However, when we compare the hybrid engines side by side, the Ford Escape offers a better EPA-estimated fuel economy of 44 city/37 highway/41 combined MPG. The Toyota RAV4 hybrid only receives up to 41 city/38 highway/40 combined MPG.
Ford Escape vs Toyota RAV4: Exterior Features
Having the best exterior features can mean the difference between seeing-and not seeing-something on the road in front of you. That's why both the 2020 Escape and the 2020 RAV4 are standardly equipped with daytime running lights with available LED lights that are brighter than standard halogen lights. Luckily, both the headlights and the taillights can be equipped with these features.
Although the lighting may be similar on the exteriors of these crossovers, they each boast a suite of different features. While both models offer a panoramic sunroof, the Ford Escape elevates luxury with its panoramic Vista Roof®. This expansive sunroof spans both rows and comes equipped with a large front panel that can tilt up slightly or open fully. Plus, in the back, there's a fixed rear skylight to elevate the commute even further. The RAV4's sunroof also tilts and opens, but it's not quite as large as the one on the Escape and it doesn't come equipped with a fixed skylight.
Escape vs RAV4: Interior Luxury
To go with their impressive power outputs and stylish exterior features, both the 2020 Ford Escape and the 2020 Toyota RAV4 are equipped with interior features designed to make every drive more comfortable and convenient.
Both vehicles offer available heated steering wheels with optional leather trimming, so your hands will remain warm. You can also opt for a dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control system in both vehicles. This feature allows you and your front passenger to set individual temperatures without having to tinker with the controls.
The Escape takes luxury up a notch by also offering available leather upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats. Unfortunately, with the RAV4, you'll only have the option of 8-way power front seats-but you'll have to upgrade to one of the top trim levels.
The Escape has also been redesigned for 2020, so inside its cabin you'll find all the latest features on the market. This includes a rotary gear shift dial that opens up space and makes switching gears fun. The 60/40 split-fold rear seats also sport an all-new sliding feature, allowing passengers in the back to enjoy a best-in-class second-row legroom of 40.7 inches. Or, you can utilize these seats to make the standard cargo area larger as well.
Unfortunately, the optimized shift dial isn't available for the Toyota RAV4. The back is equipped with 60/40 split seating. However, these seats don't slide for added cargo room or for extra space for back-seat passengers. This leaves passengers sitting in the rear seats with only 37.8 inches of legroom.
Ford vs Toyota: Safety
Safety is of the utmost importance, which is why both of these crossovers come equipped with a suite of standard features engineered for your peace of mind. No matter which model you choose, you'll have advanced driving aids on your side. However, when standardly equipped, the Ford Escape does come with more progressive driver-assistive features compared to the Toyota RAV4.
In the RAV4, you'll receive Toyota Safety Senseâ„¢ 2.0. This gives you features like a Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
In the Ford Escape, every trim is equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360â„¢. This includes:
- Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Braking
- BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert
- Rear View Camera and Automatic High Beams
- Evasive Steering Assist and Lane-Keeping System
- Voice-Activated Navigation
As you can see, more features come standard with the 2020 Escape suite. Plus, you can also add more features, such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Active Park Assist 2.0. If you want features like blind-spot monitoring and parking assist in the RAV4, you'll have to opt for the highest trim levels.
